Service Story from Dave Mathis

I became interested in pursuing training and approval as a mediator as a result of working with the Offender Victim Ministry (OVM) office in Newton, Kansas starting in January, 2017.  At the time, this seemed like a good way to  refocus my energy as I anticipated retiring from my work of 34 years with Barkman Honey Company.

In my work with juvenile offenders who were directed to our office as a pre-sentencing diversion opportunity by the county D.A., my eyes were opened to the severe limitations and inequities of the criminal justice system in our country.  Simply put, this system is just not designed to thoughtfully consider the positions and impact of victims, offenders, and the community at large. Instead, it has as its primary function the process of determining the innocence or guilt of the alleged offender and to mete out punishment accordingly.

I felt a true sense of ministry with this work of reconciliation and justice and determined I needed formal training to become better equipped.  As such, I first went to Johnson County Community College for basic training in Core Mediation and then eventually received further training for Parent Adolescent Mediation. I have now been serving for several years as a Kansas Supreme Court approved mediator and parent-adolescent mediator.

Since moving to Lawrence in February, 2019 I have become active in mediation for small claims court for both Douglas County and Johnson County.  In addition, I have participated with victim/offender mediation for the Topeka Center for Peace and Justice.  I have also been involved with a number of parent-adolescent mediations at the request of OVM in Newton.  My sense of true ministry in all of this work remains vivid and vibrant, which continually reminds me that ministry is where we find ourselves, regardless of the vocation (or in my case, volunteerism) in which we are currently involved.

*You can read more service stories and find out how to submit your story here.

Prelude: Where you Are by Rich Mullins

Welcome and Candle Lighting from Sara and Piper
(Be sure to watch all the way to the end.)

Opening Scripture: Luke 23:1-5

Call to Worship: Adapted from Palestine Israel Ecumenical Forum Liturgy Resource Toolbox

On the International Day of Solidarity with Palestine, we gather in the name of Jesus Christ who is our peace and has broken down the dividing wall that is the hostility between us.

We gather to remember those who are displaced and dispossessed as a result of an illegal occupation, and we pray for their hope in your love and your justice.

We gather to remember all those who suffer under wars and conflict and to invite all people of goodwill to join in prayer for justice, peace, and reconciliation.

We gather in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land, longing with them for the time when nothing will separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer Practice for the Week: Observing Transgender Day of Remembrance

From Elle Magazine:

“It’s only November, yet 2020 is the deadliest year on record for the transgender community.

“November 20, is Transgender Day of Remembrance. The observance grew out of a vigil for Rita Hester, a member of the Boston LGBTQ+ community who worked locally on education around trans issues and nurtured many of the city’s LGBTQ+ youth. She was killed in her home on November 28, 1998, a few days shy of her 35th birthday. Twenty-two years later, her murder has not been solved.

“This year, at least 34 transgender or gender non-conforming people have been murdered by violent means in the United States. This number is likely higher; victims are, to this day, often misgendered in local police statements and media reports, which can delay awareness of deadly incidents. The majority of these victims, like Hester, were Black transgender women living at the intersection of racism, homophobia, and transphobia.”

I invite you to pray this prayer, written by Rabbi Reuben Zellman, an openly transgender rabbi:

God full of mercy, bless the souls of all who are in our hearts on this Transgender Day of Remembrance. We call to mind today young and old, of every race, faith, and gender experience, who have died by violence. We remember those who have died because they would not hide, or did not pass, or did pass, or stood too proud. Today we name them: the reluctant activist; the fiery hurler of heels; the warrior for quiet truth; the one whom no one really knew.

As many as we can name, there are thousands more whom we cannot, and for whom no prayers may have been said. We mourn their senseless deaths, and give thanks for their lives, for their teaching, and for the brief glow of each holy flame. We pray for the strength to carry on their legacy of vision, bravery, and love.

[You can find a list of trans people killed in 2020 on the Human Rights Campaign website.]

And as we remember them, we remember with them the thousands more who have taken their own lives. We pray for resolve to root out the injustice, ignorance, and cruelty that grow despair. And we pray, God, that all those who perpetrate hate and violence will speedily come to understand that Your creation has many faces, many genders, many holy expressions.

Blessed are they, who have allowed their divine image to shine in the world.

Blessed is God, in whom no light is extinguished.”
