Sharing a fond memory from pre-COVID days!

Welcome from Andrea Zuercher

This Sunday, October 4, is World Communion Sunday. While we are not gathering as a congregation to share in Communion this week, I invite you to keep in mind the Christians around the world who are sharing in worship and communion.

Prelude: “How Great is Our God”

Opening Scripture: Luke 24:14-20 (read by Pastor Joanna)

Call to Worship: from Cathy Kowley

Gathering Hymn: Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, Hymnal Worship Book #582
(Note that the song ends a minute before the video ends–you can stop after the hymn.)

Congregational Prayer:
You are invited to offer your prayers to God. For what are you thankful this morning? What would you ask of God for yourself? Who do you know who needs God’s loving presence right now? What are your prayers for our community, our country, and our world?

Feel free to share your prayers with people around you, in the comments below, or on our Zoom call at 11 Sunday morning.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Experiencing the Story: from Jenny

Hymn: Go down, Moses (sung by Louis Armstrong; artwork by Nina Paley)
–This song is not in our hymnals, but you can still sing along with the chorus: “Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt land. Tell old Pharaoh: Let my people go.”

Sermon and Scripture Reading:

You can read a text version of the sermon on Joanna’s blog.

Time for Reflection and Prayer: from Jill Allen

Prayer Practice for the Week: Action for those who are Egypt-weary

Want to put some of the thoughts from Joanna’s sermon into practice this week? Download the document below for ideas on how to appreciate concrete tasks, share, build community, mark time, be ready for God’s future, and remember that we are God’s people. Let’s take care of ourselves and each other!

Offering

You are invited to mail your financial contributions to the church (615 Lincoln St., Lawrence, KS, 66044) or to the home of our treasurer, Roberta Renz (address in the church directory).

The Mennonite Central Committee brings relief, development and peace efforts in the name of Christ, sponsored by Anabaptists around the world.  This month, MCC celebrates its centennial, and we will be focusing on MCC, culminating in a special offering on October 18.  You can give at any time to MCC directly, or by noting “MCC” on the memo line of your church offering check. This week’s video will help us learn of the legacy of MCC.

See the “How and Where to Give” section of our announcements page for information on giving to other organizations who need funding at this time.

Closing Song: “The Gift of Light” by Joy Zimmerman
(Joy is a Kansas City-based singer/songwriter that Joanna has worked with in the past. She’s a beautiful person who writes beautiful music.)

Benediction: from Joy’s song
