Prayer Practice for the Week: This week’s practice is to offer prayers of lament. Share all of your grief, anger, and confusion with God. Speak it, sing it, write it . . . or simply feel it in your heart.
I share (with permission) a poem written by my friend (and pastor of McPherson Mennonite Church):
Lament
O God – You spoke a word and the earth was formed, mountains rose and the rains came. You parted the Red Sea, provided food and water where there was none. You healed the sick, the lame, brought people to life from the dead. O God, you are capable of any wonders Yet I remain childless.
You gave Sarah a child in her old age, children to Hannah and to Elizabeth. You opened the wombs of Rebekah and Rachel Yet I remain childless. Am I not of equal value in your sight to any of these?
O God, reach down to me in my sorrow Reach down to me in my anger Reach down to me in my pain And heal the brokenness of my heart.
—Rose Marie Zook Barber 1999

This exercise is inspired by the practices of Zen Doodling and Praying in Color. It can be an especially helpful prayer when there are lists running around in your head, when there is a situation weighing heavily on your heart, or when you just need to slown.
Use a black pen or pencil to draw a dot in each corner of your paper. Connect the dots with wavy lines to form a border.
Next, divide the framed area into several sections by drawing random lines within the frame.
Place a focus scripture, image, or thought in one of the sections near the center.
In the remaining sections of your doodle, write words, names, and/or phrases that reflect who/what you want to lift up in prayer. (For example, write “peace” in the center and fill in the other spaces with the names of people and situations for which you would ask peace.)
After you have written words in each section, begin coloring your prayer doodle one section at a time. You can color in an entire section, draw in a pattern, use multiple colors . . . anything you want.
As you color each section, offer the word(s) written there as a prayer to God. (See Pastor Joanna’s blog for pictures of an example.)
You are invited to mail your financial contributions to the church (615 Lincoln St., Lawrence, KS, 66044) or to the home of our treasurer, Roberta Renz (address in the church directory).
During October, the Mennonite Central Committee is celebrating its 100th anniversary. With the motto “Relief, Development and Peace in the name of Christ,” MCC is our partner in reaching out to the world. Last Sunday, we viewed a video that told us the history of MCC. Today, we look at more of the role of MCC in the Anabaptist world. Next Sunday, we will show the relationship of MCC with Peace Mennonite in Lawrence. (Contact Ken Ratzlaff if you have been involved with MCC!) Then we will join Anabaptist churches worldwide in an offering to further MCC’s work, touching lives of people uprooted by conflict and disaster and helping to build peace to families and communities.
You can give at any time to MCC directly, or by noting “MCC” on the memo line of your church offering check.

Prayer Practice for the Week: Star Gazing! With gratitude to Becky Janzen for the guidance and photo below.
The planets Saturn and Jupiter have been hanging around in the southern skies for months now. In fact, they will still be observable when we have our bonfire, scheduled for October 17. Just look south on any clear night this week! Jupiter is white and the brightest object in the southern sky. Saturn is to the left of Jupiter a few degrees, dimmer than Jupiter. The red star Antares in the constellation Scorpius is starting to set in the western sky. On Sunday night, a fairly new crescent moon will be setting in the west. Each night it creeps eastward about 15 degrees, so that by Thursday, the now half-full moon will be very near Jupiter and Saturn. The photo (attached) shows the line-up about 8:30 pm, but the trio will be visible at dark and marching slowly westward all evening. The “cloudiness” in the photo between the moon and Antares is actually the Summer Milky Way. You would need to be in dark skies to see it well. Other than the moon’s position, which changes nightly, Jupiter and Saturn will be visible just like the photo all week and into the fall.
And if the skies do not cooperate for your outdoor viewing pleasure next week, then you can flee the earth with a virtual version of the cosmos instead. These images of the wondrous objects in our nighttime (and daytime) heavens were captured by the winners of the 2020 Astronomy Photographer of the Year Competition.

(A manuscript version of this sermon is available on Joanna’s blog.)
Prayer Practice for the Week: As we consider the stories of creation from Genesis, I offer these suggestions from Patrice (earlier shared for our spring retreat):
On your own, go to a natural area and ask for God’s presence and guidance. If you wish, you may refer to the following suggestions, or just be part of the natural world in that area, and open to what you can learn.
Things to look for: Look for signs of regeneration – how is God’s grace expressed in nature? Many of us have experienced disruption of things we had planned to do. Can you see signs of how nature deals with change?
Questions to consider: Is the social isolation we now experience part of an extended Sabbath? Are we, as a part of nature, experiencing rest from our usual frantic activity? Can this time of rest be an opening to changing our economy from extractive industries to supporting sustainable, renewable ways of living? In the words of Sarah Augustine: How can we cooperate with the spirit of life?
Offeringour Money

Many of you have donated to the Western District Conference Hope fund. One of the churches to receive money from this fund was Iglesia Menonita Comunidad de Vida in San Antonio, Texas. Blanca Vargas shares how they were able to use the money they received:
A family was saved from being evicted from their apartment, suspension of utility services and loss of their vehicle, by catching up on their delinquent credits.
The pastoral family received relief from their economic situation with a month’s mortgage, while they were able to rent the house that was being used for the services of the local community.
A woman victim of domestic violence who fled her home with her three children to save her life, received support to buy some clothes and gasoline for her vehicle. She was able to dress decently and go out to get a job.
The leftover money is being used to help with food to people who are still in need.
God bless those who had this initiative of sharing and those who continue to contribute to nurture this fund!

Offering our Efforts
A significant way that Peace Mennonite lives out the “work for justice” aspect of our mission statement is by participating in Justice Matters. You are all encouraged to join an upcoming “house” meeting to engage in meaningful conversation with others from the church around significant issues in our community. You can sign up here and watch the video invitation from our team leaders below!
Note that each meeting will have basically the same content. We hope you will sign up for the one that works best with your schedule (and/or offers the most enticing food option).
